Our tree services

We handle the full range of tree work for rural, residential, commercial and government clients. Whatever the job, the same qualified crew and the same standard of clean-up applies.

What's the difference between an arborist and a tree lopper?

An arborist is trained in tree biology, pruning technique and safe work practice. A tree lopper usually isn't. Lopping a tree back to stubs might look cheap and tidy for a reason, but it triggers weak regrowth that becomes tomorrow's hazard, and it often kills the tree slowly.

Our founder and lead arborist, Mathieu Vaupres, has spent more than 20 years working with trees in France and Australia, and everyone on the crew holds a minimum Certificate III in Arboriculture. That training is the difference between cutting a tree and managing one: we can tell you whether a tree needs removing, or whether targeted pruning or a health treatment will suffice.

The right gear for any job

Plenty of tree jobs in the Otways are awkward: steep blocks, tight town gardens, big old Cypress windbreaks on farms. Our fleet covers all of it: 2 tipper trucks, 2 woodchippers, elevated work platforms, stump grinder, excavator, log splitter and articulated loader with a log grab. Where machines can't go, our qualified climbers can.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does an arborist actually do?

Arborists are trained in the cultivation and care of trees: pruning, safe removal, and the diagnosis and treatment of tree diseases. In practice that means we can remove a dangerous tree, but we can also tell you when a tree doesn't need to come down at all and a prune or health treatment will do the job for less.

  • Are your arborists qualified and insured?

Yes. Everyone on the Colac Trees team holds or trains to obtain a minimum of Certificate III in Arboriculture, and the business carries $20 million in public liability insurance plus WorkCover and Motor Vehicles insurance. Not every tree service can say that, so it's worth asking before anyone starts a chainsaw on your property.

  • How much does an arborist cost?

It depends entirely on the job: the size and condition of the tree, how easy the access is, and what you want done with the timber and stump. That's why we quote every job in person, for free, with no obligation. Our prices include clean-up unless the quote says otherwise.

  • Do you remove stumps as well?

Yes. We run our own stump grinding machinery and can grind out stumps of any size, including narrow-access stumps in backyards. Grinding takes the stump below ground level so you can replant grass or garden over the top, and it stops the stump attracting pests or sending up regrowth.

  • Can I keep the mulch or firewood from my trees?

Absolutely. A lot of our clients keep the chips for garden mulch or have the trunk cut into rounds for firewood. Just let us know when we quote the job, so we can plan the cut and leave everything where you want it.

  • Do you handle storm-damaged or dangerous trees?

Yes. Storm-damaged trees are under tension and genuinely dangerous, so they need qualified climbers, proper rigging and the right machinery. If a tree or limb has come down on your place, call us on 0488 553 650 and we'll get eyes on it as soon as we can.
