Stump Removal and Grinding in Colac

Qualified arborists grinding tree stumps below ground level across Colac, the Otways and surrounding districts.

A stump left behind after tree removal doesn't just sit there. It regrows suckers, attracts termites, blunts mower blades and takes up ground you could be using. Colac Trees removes tree stumps across the Colac region with an industrial stump grinder that shaves the stump into woodchips, taking it to ground level or below so you can mow, pave, replant or build over the spot.

Stump grinding vs stump removal: what's the difference?

Stump grinding shaves the stump into fine woodchips using a toothed cutting wheel, working down to ground level or below. Full stump removal digs out the stump and major roots entirely. For nearly every residential and farm job, grinding is the better option: it's faster, cheaper, doesn't leave a crater, and the remaining roots break down naturally underground. We'll recommend digging out a stump only when something is going to be built directly over it.

Either way, you get a tidy site. Our prices include removal of the grindings unless you'd like to keep them, and stump mulch makes a decent garden topping once it's aged.

How our stump removal works

Step 1: Free quote

Call 0488 553 650 or send us photos of the stump with something for scale. For most jobs we can quote from photos and a quick chat about access; bigger or trickier stumps get a site visit. Quotes are obligation free.

Step 2: We grind the stump out

On the day, we check for services near the stump, protect the surrounding lawn and garden, and grind the stump down. Most single stumps are done within the hour. Removing several at once? Grinding multiple stumps in one visit costs less per stump, so it's worth pointing out every one you want gone.

Step 3: Clean-up and finish

We rake out the grindings, backfill the hole with the mulch or with soil on request, and leave the area ready for grass, garden or paving. If we removed the tree too, the whole job happens in one booking.

Why get the stump out at all?

  • Regrowth: many species, especially elms and willows, sucker aggressively from a live stump
  • Pests: rotting stumps are a known harbour for termites and borers close to your home
  • Safety: stumps hidden in grass are a trip hazard and a mower killer
  • Space: a ground-level finish gives you back lawn, garden beds or room to build

One crew for the tree and the stump

Colac Trees is a team of qualified arborists, not just stump grinder operators. We handle tree removal, pruning, hedge cutting, tree bracing and stem injection across the Colac district, so if the stump is still attached to a tree, we can take care of the whole job from canopy to ground level in one visit. We also create habitat hollows for wildlife from suitable trunks, ask us when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much does stump removal cost in Colac?

It depends on the stump's diameter, species, access and how deep you want it ground. Rather than guess, we give obligation-free quotes, and photos are usually enough for an accurate price. Grinding several stumps in one visit works out cheaper per stump.

  • How deep do you grind the stump?

Standard grinding goes to around 100-300mm below ground level, which is enough to re-turf or plant a garden over the spot. If you're planning paving, a shed slab or new planting with deeper roots, tell us when you book and we'll grind deeper to suit.

  • Can you get the grinder into my backyard?

Usually, yes. Our machine fits through standard side access, and we assess gates, slopes and soft ground when we quote. If access is genuinely tight, mention it up front and send a photo of the narrowest point so we can plan the job properly.

  • Will the tree grow back after grinding?

Once the stump is ground below the crown of the root system, regrowth from the stump itself stops. Some species can still throw the odd sucker from remaining lateral roots for a season or two; these are easily mowed or treated, and we'll tell you at the job if your species is one of them.

  • Can I keep the mulch from my stump?

Absolutely. Just let us know when we quote and we'll leave the grindings raked into a pile or spread where you want them. Fresh stump grindings are best aged for a few months before going onto garden beds. If you don't want them, removal is included in our price.

  • Do you handle storm-damaged or dangerous trees?

Yes. Storm-damaged trees are under tension and genuinely dangerous, so they need qualified climbers, proper rigging and the right machinery. If a tree or limb has come down on your place, call us on 0488 553 650 and we'll get eyes on it as soon as we can.
